VIH Cougar Helicopters, Inc. (formerly Western Airways, Inc.) began operating in 1995 based in Boise, Idaho. Since then, our experience has spanned Part 135, Part 133 and Part 91 operations. Our continuing goal has been to provide the superior service that has earned us a reputation as a world class helicopter maintenance operation.

Over the years, VIHC has contracted to the US Forest Service and many other customers. Additionally, we served as a prime contractor for the U.S. Coast Guard overhauling dynamic components for their helicopter fleet. Our company was certified to conduct NDI testing and operated a calibration service capable of certifying test equipment to National Standards for several customers including US Air.

Some of our Aviation Craftsmen who performed that work are still working for VIH Cougar in our offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. From our modest beginnings through the addition of larger, new technology aircraft, we've embraced the importance of selecting professional and experienced A&P's to continue our quest for superior maintenance programs. Today, we employ A&P's from all over the country with an average experience level of twenty years; some having more than 35 years in aviation.

All of our A&P mechanics, avionics technicians and support personnel receive aircraft or job related training from approved manufacturer schools. Policies are in place to ensure training keeps our work force in cue with the world's latest maintenance technology. We are proud of our professional maintenance staff and we are committed to safety, dependability and customer satisfaction.

Training

Typical maintenance training consists of an initial period of three days and recurrent training on a yearly basis in aspects of the maintenance control policies, Minimum Equipment List and the Aircraft Journey Logbooks. We also provide our employees with training in the areas of First Aid, OHSA, and dangerous goods, as well as additional training courses to enhance safety and professional development such as Human Factors.

VIH Cougar Helicopters has also developed the expertise to build and implement an in-house maintenance technician training program to ensure our maintenance staff are current with the latest regulations, aircraft systems and Human Factors concepts. We write our own syllabus on recurrent maintenance training for our aircraft. We can also conduct remote training utilizing our video conferencing technology.

Our technical records staff receive training specific to their area of expertise and on the software databases we are using. This department, supported by the IT department, has developed a unique personnel training database that tracks all historical and future training requirements for the entire maintenance staff.

Aircraft Stores staff also receive training tailored to meet the requirements of receiving and certification of aircraft appliances.
